“The Lady Doth Protest!”

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

“The lady doth protest too much!” This famous line Is from the Shakespearean play Hamlet is spoken by a nefarious queen. The meaning of the line revolves around the idea that someone who denies something vehemently, most certainly must be hiding the truth.

For Judah’s protest, it means that she too is hiding the truth. But God knows very well the truth. And so God’s discipline is exact for her crimes.

She should have been asking [I should be asking], “How can I profit from my mistakes?“ I Come clean with the truth, honor God, repent and change.

Lord, may I have the courage to admit my sin and change my way.

God Speaks; It’s Done

(Jer 30:1-7)

Walk in reliance and trust in God’s sovereign will and plan (eg. JER 30:1-7). #TrustGod’sPlan #FullyRelyOnGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Through the voice of Jeremiah, God makes it clear that though Israel and Judah will live through terrifying times, the nation, as one, will survive. Because of sin and rebellion, the land of Israel and the holy city of Jerusalem will be lost, the people dispersed throughout the world. However, God will restore the nation of Israel.

Make no mistake, recovery of the nation of Israel and its people will not be a coincidence of history. It is a matter of prophetic utterance and record (v1,2). God is sovereign and in view of history we see his hand at work, even today, to restore his people to their land. Lord, may I trust and rest in your sovereign will and plan.

Glory, Infinitely Better

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Ezekiel’s “dearest treasure,” his wife, has died suddenly as part of God’s prophetic purposes (vv22-25). He is to show no grief; no tears, no public display of ritual mourning, accept no consolation from friends.

I note that on this date it is a little over two years (hard to believe) since my “dearest treasure”, my bride of 53 years, Dianne, joined her Lord in her eternal home.

I cannot imagine not being able to express my grief, no mourning the loss of my bride: no friends allowed to console and no traditional public expressions or ritual services; only personal and private mourning allowed. The painful loss of such a long time partner in life and ministry would seemingly be too much to bear alone.

When I think about how Ezekiel could do such a thing, I can only recall my own private tearful laments with God. I can recall God’s quiet gentle assurances to me (eg. Jer 17:7,8). I know that God was as present with Ezekiel then as he was/has been with me now.

Lord, I look ahead to the day when we shall be reunited in a heavenly glory, along with many others who have gone before us. It won’t look like it did here on earth. It will be a glory, infinitely better.

Take It To The Bank

(Ezk 24:1,2)

Have faith in the teachings and prophecies of God‘s word (‭‭Ezk‬ ‭24:1,2). #God’sWordIsTrue

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

King Zedekiah took the final steps of geo-political rebellion and sealed Jerusalem‘s fate (2Ki 25:1-7). He broke his vows to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and foolishly rebelled. All the prophecies of Jeremiah and Ezekiel were now in play. The siege, destruction and demise of Jerusalem was underway.

Amazingly, Ezekiel is informed of this the very day of the attack, January 15, 588 BC. Ezekiel, hundreds of miles away, is notified of the attack by God himself. God makes it a point for Ezekiel to write it down. Take it to the bank, the third and final attack of Babylon will end the earthly reign of the southern kingdom of Judah. Ezekiel, Jeremiah and other prophets had predicted this.

Lord, these writings and prophecies, which all came true, gives me every reason to believe in the teachings and prophecies (yet to unfold) of God‘s word.

The Righteous & The Mob

(Ezk 23:45-49)

Godless Hordes Destroy
Jerusalem (586 BC)

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

How shall these rebellious people of God be judged? ANS: by the righteous (v45,49) and the mob [hordes; armies] (vv 46-49). The “righteous“ are likely the prophets of old, functioning as “elders“ (eg. Deu 21:18-21). “Death by stoning” mentioned in v47 was the usual penalty for adultery (Lev 20:10,27).

The “mob“ mentioned here are the godless hordes of “carousing enemies of the wilderness” (v42) with whom these two twisted sisters had committed spiritual adultery (forging alliances and worshiping their pagan gods). Lest the godless expect mercy, Ezekiel closes with a dyer warning (v48).

Lord, dare I claim any righteousness of my own? But Jesus alone is my righteousness. (Psm 24:3-6).

God, Jealous?

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Ezekiel 23:22-34 is a repetition of God‘s judgment on Judah. She followed the same detestable path as Israel. But verse 25 reveals God‘s state of mind – “JEALOUS”.

Years ago I heard a preacher say, “Some say the God of the Old Testament is a God of wrath; the God of the New Testament is a God of love. Not so,” he said. “He is always a God of love provoked by his adulteress people to jealousy.“ [read Exodus 20:5,6]

The question for me is, do I identify with God over sin (does it break my heart?) or am I just comfortable with sin all around me? Lord, may I have a heart that burns for righteousness.

A Disloyal Passion

(Ezk 23:1-4)

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

This is the second of three oracles by Ezekiel. It is spoken by God as a parable. It regards to two sisters, both of whom had gone the way of prostitution in Egypt. The one named Ahola (the older), represented Samaria (capital citi of the northern kingdom, Israel). The second named Ohlibah, represented Jerusalem (capital city of the southern kingdom, Judah).

The two sisters’ Origen: their story begins in Egypt, the place from which God delivered them (his people) out of slavery. These two sisters showed their unfaithful and ungrateful heart towards God by their disloyal passion for idolatry.* Lord, reveal any idolatrous, adulterous way in me, that I may turn from it in loyal love to you.

HOPE THAT SECURES

(Psm 43:1-5)

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

[Psalm 43 is actually a part of Psalm 42 in Hebrew manuscripts. It is also a stand alone Psalm (note 42:5,11 & 43:5). The theme in both psalms are HOPE in times of discouragement and loneliness]

The Psalmist declares it is HOPE in God that assures, rescues and secures him in times of discouragement, loneliness and attacks from enemies.

His questions are sincere and thoughtful. They clarify his values and give him strength in times of grief. He looks to the light of God‘s truth, his source of joy. His HOPE is firmly in God. Lord, may my heart turn quickly to you in times of discouragement.

Good Testimony of Conscience

(Psm 25:16-22)

Make certain a clear conscience before God and man (Psm 25:16-22). #GoodConscience #CallUponGod

“I always strive to have a clear conscience toward God and men.” (Acts‬ ‭24‬:‭16‬)

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

This prayer closes as it began (v1,2). The deep distress of soul reaches for divine favor and mercy. Things have gone from bad to worse in the life of the psalmist. The difficulty, sorrow and distress of spirit is heavy upon him. He relies upon his good testimony of conscience. He has done nothing to provoke his adversary.

The psalmist closes seeking remedy and relief from those who wish to do him harm. But God knows the truth. His trust and hope is in God alone. He calls upon God to redeem him from his troubles. At times, only I alone and God know the motivations of my heart and actions. Lord, may I always have a clear conscience toward God and man.

The Path

(Psm 25:8-10)

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

God can be counted upon to do what is right. If I go astray, he shows me the way back to his path. The humble he will guide. He will lead them on his path for them.

If I am faithful, keep covenant with God and obey his commands, I can count on him to continue to guide me in mercy and truth. Why would I not give myself wholeheartedly to following my Lord?

Lord, may I remain walking in THE PATH you have laid out for me; correct me when I stray.

Riddle Of The Eagles (Pt 1a)

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The first eagle, great and powerful, flew into Lebanon and plucked off the top of a cedar tree. He carried it off to another land.

The eagle was Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon. He deposed Jehoiachin, king of Judah in Jerusalem (Lebanon) and removed all of Judah‘s rulers and princes to Babylon (the city of merchants). There, Jehoiachin and others were planted.

This allegorical prophecy, preceded the actual events pictured by a couple of years. In 597 BC this prophecy began to be fulfilled (2Ki 24:8-16). Lord, your word is true, and I may rely fully upon all that it says.

Why’d The Chicken Cross…?

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Sometimes life confronts us with a conundrum – a mystery or problem for which there seems to be no clear understanding. God uses such riddles to convey spiritual truth.* This riddle of two eagles (vv1-10) would be explained by Ezekiel (vv11-24).

Real life problems will either drive us closer to God or drive us further away; the later not being the better path. Though God explains this riddle, sometimes God‘s intended outcomes for us are not immediately known in the moment. But if we surrender to God‘s will, walk with and seek him, in due time it shall be made clear. **

Lord, may I, in every season of my life, look to you, my hope for your glorious outcomes.

Trashed Life

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

This passage is difficult to read. God describes the unseemly birth of Israel. It is stark and harsh. It reminds me of a botched abortion. The baby is born alive. No one wanted it – it was left on the table to die. Or the baby was born at home. Then, unwanted, it was put into a trash sack and put into a trash dumpster as refuse.

“BUT I [God] RESCUED YOU.” God then spoke words of “life“ over the discarded infant, Israel. As she grew, God covered her as her redeemer (Ruth 3:8-10). God made a covenant with Israel to make her his very own bride. But Israel spurned and ignored God’s love. Lord, how could I ever ignore you? Your love for this old sentry has exceeded all expectations.

Don’t Be Confused

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

There was much confusion over the truth in Israel. False prophets were giving messages that were in conflict with Ezekiel and Jeremiah (see also Jer 28:2-14; 29:8,9). They were “whitewashing“ the truth. They were promoting/selling “magic charms“ and magic veils”. They were telling the people everything was all right when it was not.

The false prophets lied and invented false predictions. God was about to clear up the confusion – 1Co 14:30-33. Their “whitewashed wall“ will crumble under a flood of God‘s anger and judgment. They will be banished from the land, their names blotted out from Israel’s record books. Lord, may I stay grounded in the truth of your word.

11th Commandment: YADAH-YADAH NOT 🙄

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

A second myth, similar to the first (v22), is also dispelled. It says, “No worries man. Ezekiel‘s prophecies won’t happen for a very long time“. Concerning Christ’s return, some in the early church had a similar view… And many even today. Some say, “It’s been 2000 years and Christ has yet to come.” There’s plenty of time.

But God says in Ezekiel 12, “No more delays. I will do as I threatened“. God’s people in Ezekiel’s day, as in our day, have a duty to live in the light of prophecy being fulfilled at any time (2 Peter 3:8-13).

Lord, reading these words, presses me to live in the immediacy of prophecy, as if it will come true in any moment.

YADAH-YADAH-YADAH 🙄

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

God is here dispelling two popular myths – unfounded popular proverbs: the first, “Time passes, prophecies come to nothing.“ In-other-words, YADA-YADA-YADA! We’ve heard this doom and gloom before. Nothing comes of it. God will end that perspective.

Prophetic words uttered may or may not be true. Fulfillment (the rule of authenticity) may not occur for decades. It comes down to discernment of truth and error. The Christian is equipped by the Spirit of God to discern such things and respond accordingly (Jhn 16:13). History tells us, if God says it…It will be!

Lord, may I have a profound sense of discernment regarding any prophetic word attributed to you.*

Pay Attention To God’s Call

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Several years have passed since these Jews in Babylon had been exiled from Jerusalem. They were still arrogantly believing that God would rescue them, that Israel’s armies would deliver them. They believed false prophets who said they would return to their homeland soon. God had not yet been able to penetrate their prideful hearts.

So God calls upon Ezekiel once again to act out the painful reality of their circumstances. In a dramatic fashion, Ezekiel was to, 1) role play the part of the exiles leaving Jerusalem (vv 3-6); 2) shake and tremble while eating and drinking water (vv 17-20). Lord, I see here the great lengths to which you will go to call your people (me) repentance.

How God Grieves Over Sin

Don’t delay to humbly repent and surrender fully to God (Ezk 11:22-24). #GodsGrief #TurnNowToGod #RepentTowardsGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

This may be one of the saddest days in Israel’s history. The Glory of God, his presence, left the Temple, then the city of Jerusalem.

But the Glory of God stopped above the Mount of Olives and hovered there. Presumably it then ascended into heaven.

I wonder if, in that hovering, God stopped to look one more time at Jerusalem, grieved and weeping over Israel’s sin and rejection.

Jesus, The the Radiance of God’s Glory Weeps over Jerusalem

I wonder if Jesus (as God, the radiance of God’s glory) remembered that moment in the Old Testament when he saw the sin and rejection of Israel happening all over again [Jesus wept and spoke words of deep grief – Luk 19:41-44].

Jerusalem would continue to be devoid of God‘s blessing until his Glory returns for the final time in the millennium (Ezk 43:1–7; Acts 1:11–12). Ezekiel‘s vision ends here. He was then moved by the Spirit of God to go and share with the Jewish exiles in Babylon all that he had seen and heard.

Lord, my delay to repent of sin, cuts deeply into the heart of God. May my words be few and may they speak surrender.

God’s Word, Like A Rock

Put your full faith in God‘s word as true & reliable (Ezk 11:10,11). #TrustGodsWord #GodsWordIsReliable

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Versus 10 and 11 are not mere hyperbole or some metaphor used to explain God‘s judgment. This prophecy became Jerusalem‘s reality when Babylon took over Jerusalem and destroyed the temple, 596-581 BC (Jer 52:8-11, 24-28).

Further, God‘s people thought they were impregnable because God had given them their land – but God had also warned them if they did not follow him wholeheartedly he would remove them from it (Deu 28:15, 36, 64-68). HE DID! But in their near future God would return them to their land (11:17-19). Ezekiel also predicts Israel’s full restoration to the land as yet to unfold at Christ’s return (Ezk 36:24-28; 37:21-28).

God’s word is trustworthy and reliable. It is able to discern the hearts of men (Heb 4:12). Lord, may I know an unwavering faith in the truth and reliability of your word.

Faithfulness Remembered

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The psalmist ends his writing in a way I did not expect. He sounds like a man who has been faithful to God all his life. But in the end, he makes an open confession – “I have wandered like a lost sheep“ (v176). However, he has not forgotten the importance of God’s word. So, there is hope for every soul that has wandered – haven’t we all? I have.

I am reminded here that the effect and wisdom of God‘s word will see me through, even in times I wander…if I am willing to turn to God and his word. Lord, may my heart trust your faithfulness even through times when I have not been so faithful (2Ti 2:13).

Buried Treasure

May you know peace beyond all comprehension (Psm 119:161-168). #PeaceWithoutLimits #PeaceBeyoundComprehension

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

We love to watch movies of great adventurous raiders of ancient tombs, or pirates searching for buried treasure in uncharted islands. Here the psalmist becomes the happy hunter of great treasures – he finds untold wealth in the pages of scripture (vv162,165).

This buried treasure in the pages of God‘s word brings what wealth, power, and fame cannot – PEACE. Peace to the troubled soul. Peace to the broken heart. Peace to the nations whose people are harassed by godless men. Lord, your word gives me peace that passes all understanding (Jhn 14:27; Phi 4:7).

Resolved!

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Many there are that disregard God’s word. They are not satisfied with unbelief. No, they feel it is their job to ridicule me or persecute me.

While I struggle to understand why they so hate God‘s word, even me for loving it, I trust God to argue my case and protect me. I do not swerve from the truth of God‘s word. It is the very essence of truth. It will win the day.

Lord, may my heart be resolved & steadfast in your truth.

Renewal

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Psalm 119:147 has long been the motivation for my early Morning Watch hour. I come praying, seeking, crying out to God in the early morning hours. I read God‘s word daily. It fuels my prayer for those I love and have committed to pray.

God‘s word revives, refreshes, renews, and restores my soul. The Lord is near in his word and in my intercessions. No matter the challenges in my life, God‘s word and prayer have been a fortress around me. Lord, I have found no sustaining power like prayer and the knowledge of God‘s word.

Perfect Treasure

May you know the treasured enlightenment of God‘s word (Psm 119:137-144). #GodsWordThoroughlyTested #TreasuredEnlightenment

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

My heart agrees with the psalmist here. I have found God‘s word to be fair, trustworthy, and perfect in every way. It has never failed me in any circumstance of life.

God‘s promises truly are thoroughly tested and found 100% adequate for all of life’s circumstances. When pressure and stress overwhelm me I find comfort, peace and joy in God‘s word. Lord, I find in your word, the perfect treasure of valued enlightenment.

Open For Business

Retain a heart that is open for business to God‘s word (Psm 119:129-136). #HeartOpenForBudiness #NoClosedMind

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

God‘s word is no lofty book of exalted philosophies reserved only for the most learned. No! It’s teaching gives light (understanding) to the simplest of minds. Even a child can grasp its meanings.

God’s word guides every step…if I am so predisposed to listen. It keeps me from being overcome by evil. It delivers me from those whose aim it is to do harm. The Lord teaches me from his word. Lord, may my heart remain “open for business” to the teachings of your word.

More Desirable Than Gold

Seek to know God’s word above all else (Psm 119:121-128). #Undivided #WhollyDevotedToGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The word of God – “more desirable than gold“ (v127). The psalmist exalts the word of God to the level of a most treasured possession. He expresses a deep love and respect for God‘s word.

Further, the psalmist points to his life as one who serves the living God because of his living word to men. He seeks justice, mercy, and love from God as he faithfully seeks to learn from and follow God‘s word. Lord, I receive your word as exceeding all other sources of wisdom in my life.

UNDIVIDED!

Be undivided in your devotion to God and his word (Psm 119:113-120). #Undivided #WhollyDevotedToGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

I am reminded immediately here that a double minded man is unstable in all his ways (Jas 1:5–8). Jesus said, “You cannot serve two masters“ (Mat 6:24). I must rid my life of evil minded people and fill my life with people who love God‘s word; are undivided in their loyalty to God.

It is God and his word that sustains me, rescues and informs me in the choices I make and the voices I follow. I am in awe of God‘s word and his work in my life. Lord, my choice in life is clear. I will serve and devote myself to the Lord God (Josh 24:15).

Trust To The End

Trust, obey and follow God’s word to the end (Psm 119:105-112). #TrustInGodsWord

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Here is found a most familiar memory verse, Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp onto my feet, a light into my path.“ The psalmist renews his own ongoing promise to trust, obey and follow God‘s holy word.

No matter the circumstances in life, the call to God is for renewal and restoration. Even in the face of adversaries and suffering, the psalmist finds God‘s word as a precious treasure – a delight. He is determined to keep it all the way to the very end.

Lord, your word is always a faithful guide in my life, for which I am grateful.

Discerning the Truth

Seek to know God’s word and be discerning of truth. (Psm 119:97-104). #TrustInGodsWord #BeDiscerningOfTruth

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The psalmist is looking at God‘s word as practical instruction, wisdom. He says God‘s word makes him “superior“ in wisdom, understanding and judgment to his enemies, teachers and elders.

This is no arrogant statement. It simply points out that God‘s word gives men the capacity to be discerning of the spirits. Men may know the difference between truth and error. It is seeing through the spirit of the age; any spirit hostile and/or lax towards truth. This false spirit persecuted the writer for trusting in God’s word. It will us too.

Lord, you give me good reason to trust in and believe your word.

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The psalmist asks God for good judgment and knowledge.* A lot of good judgment comes from having made bad judgments – not that it has to be that way. But the psalmist admits to have wandered off the path of understanding. Yet, God was merciful. He reveals that the suffering from bad judgment teaches us to pay more close attention to God‘s word, follow it more carefully (vv67, 71; Jas 1:2-7).

Others may devalue God word. But God’s word will always lead me in truth. I can have confidence in that. God‘s word is more valuable than any precious metal. Lord, I have learned from experience to value highly your word.
