My “Blue” Heaven

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Walk in reverent fear of God‘s truth & faithfulness (Ezk 1:26-28). #SeeGodInNewWays #Truth #GodIsFaithful #RevereGod’sTruth-Faithfulness

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Every prophet of God has a call that is unique to them. Ezekiel‘s call stands alone as a vision of the likeness of God in all his glory. Ezekiel describes God and his throne. It’s made of brilliant blue lapis lazuli (blue sapphire). The heavens declare his glory (Psm 19:1).

Biblical sources reveal sapphire (the color blue) as representative of truth – the accuracy and sincerity of God‘s word.* It’s the ground upon which God’s feet rest (Exo 24:10). I come away with an overwhelming sense of sheer reverence for the God I serve, his faithfulness and authenticity.

Lord, may my walk before you exemplify that reverent honor for your truth & faithfulness.

_______

* Sapphire is blue in color. In the Bible the color blue or sapphire stones may represent God and things dedicated to a holy purpose (Exo 24:10; Ezk 1:26; Num 4:5,6; Rev 21:19). Blue may also represent things like the Spirit, heavenly visitation, heaven itself, grace, truth, faithfulness and cleansing.

[There is more material here than I can write about. I have given 4-6 hours over several days pondering the meaning of these things.] Here is one link that has been helpful:

Majestic Power Revealed

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Pray to persevere to understand God’s word (Ezk 1:13,14; 1Pe 2:2). #PersistInGodsWord #CallUponGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Ezekiel further elaborates on the living beings he saw in vv4-7, as if they were bright coals of fire or brilliant, burning torches. He saw what seemed like lighting, flashing back-and-forth between the beings. The reference to coals of fire, burning torches and lightening likely refer to the message of judgment of God on Judah that Ezekiel will soon deliver.

The 21st century observer might look at this vision as “sci-fi.“ Who could have imagined such a thing hundreds of centuries ago (some 600 years before Christ)? Yet, there is still more of this vision to unpack.

I’m trying hard not to get lost in the weeds. I’m trying to just imagine the sheer power and majesty of God revealed here. Lord, I pray for understanding and the perseverance needed to press into this vision and message of Ezekiel.

Show Me

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Call upon God for understanding of the Scriptures (Ezk 1:10-12). #ShowMeLord #CallUponGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

It is difficult to know exactly the meaning of the four faces on the living beings described by Ezekiel. The most obvious leads me to creation: the human face being the apex of God‘s creation (intelligence), the lion’s face represents the wild animal kingdom (power), the ox face the livestock domesticated animals (service) and the eagle, the king of the air (swiftness).

The four heads connected form the shape of a square. They may represent the four corners of the earth and God‘s sovereignty over all of creation. Other interpretations also exist but these seem the most likely. In truth, Ezekiel is trying to describe something he’d never seen before. The word picture given by Ezekiel is incredibly luminary and mysterious at the same time. Lord, I call upon you for understanding of the mysteries of your word (Jer 33:3).

In Him We Move

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Seek to move in unison with the heartbeat of God for this world (Ezk 1:10-14). #HeartForGod #UnityOfPurpose

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Ezekiel continues his elaboration of the four beings and what he saw in his vision of God. Each of the four living beings that he saw (vv 5–9) came out of dark clouds above him and each had four faces. A human face was on the front, a lion’s face was on the right side, an ox face was on the left, and an eagle’s face was on the backside. All were covered in seeing eyes.

The four faces enable them move to forward in any direction without turning. They did so in a lightening fast, darting fashion as they were led by the spirit. The eyes enable them to see everywhere and at once. Spirit here likely refers to the mind or will; metaphorically as the wind and human soul (note Psm 104). The will of these beings was harnessed by God as one. They moved as God led them and in unison and in any direction.

Lord, may I move in unison with the heartbeat of God for my world.

United in Purpose

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

May we order the many parts of our lives in unity with God’s purposes (Ezk 1:5-9). #UnitedInPurpose #ManyPartsOneWill

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The vision of Ezekiel is here further described. The four beings (cherubs) looked human in their form. Each being had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight. Each being had human hands under their lower wings. Their feet were like the hooves of a calf – were bright shining light polished brand bronze.

The upper wings stretched out and touched the wings of the other being, forming a square shape. The beings darted (v14) about in any direction without turning and did so according to the movement of the spirit within them (v12). The unity in this vision is clear. There are many parts, all of which move in unity according to the spirit within them. Lord, may I order my life in unity with your will and purposes.

God’s Call

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Remain open to, obedient to God‘s call on your life (Ezk 1:1–3). #GodsCall #OpenToGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

We are introduced to Ezekiel as God opens up the heavens and reveals to him extraordinary visions. These were apocalyptic (revelatory) in nature. Ezekiel felt the hand of God take hold of him. (Note Ezk 3:12–17). Ezekiel was constrained by God to his prophetic ministry.

While Jeremiah is preaching to the people of Jerusalem, Ezekiel is called of God to his prophetic ministry in Babylon. He had been among those deported from Jerusalem to Babylon (597 BC). He was of the priestly class, following Aaron‘s lineage (Exo 28:1).

Lord, the call of God leaves no doubt, nor is the one called left dangling, for God holds that one.

What Does It Mean?

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Seek humbly to understand God’s word (Ezk 1:28; 2:1,2; 3:23,24). #ListeningToGod #SayWhat

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

My heart is perplexed as I read God‘s call of Ezekiel. It is a call like no other prophet in length, scope and vision. His call is three chapters long. It is simple yet, complex. I have pondered the vision and message (the call) of Ezekiel for several days. I want to understand all of it, but my heart is perplexed, hesitant. Yet I am moved to grasp its meaning.

I am asking God for understanding. I am asking him to overcome my hesitations and lack of COURAGE to press into this prophetic book. I wish to emulate Ezekiel, coming face down to the ground in humility before God. I pray to God, “Lord, may this old sentry receive understanding of all that you intend from this prophetic book.” As I pray, I’m hearing God say, as he said to Ezekiel, “Stand up, I want to speak with you by my Spirit” (2:1,2; 3:24 above).

Thank you Lord for your

EN-COURAGE-MENT

Do What You Say

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

When you say, “Yes“ to God, follow through (Jer 34:8-11). #DoWhatYouSay #FollowThroughMatters #MeanWhatYouSay

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Just prior to the Babylonian conquest of Judah, the king, Zedekiah, has a change of heart about fellow Hebrew slaves in the land. His motivation is unknown, but he makes a covenant with the people to follow the Hebrew law (ignored for hundred of years) and free their countrymen slaves (Exo 21:1–6; Lev 25:39–43; Deu 15:12–15).

The people obeyed, but then later reneged and brought their fellow Hebrews back into bondage.* It is obvious that Zedekiah and the people were not wholeheartedly following God‘s commands to them; more evidence of their coming judgment. Lord, may my oft wayward heart willingly follow your loving commands.

_______

* Speaking to unbelieving Jews again in the New Testament, Jesus speaks a parable to this same effect in Mat 21:28-32. If you tell God, “Yes”, just do what you say.

World In Balance

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Give to the Lord the reverence due him (Psm 104:5-9). #PlanetEarth #AweAndReverence

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

The wording of this poetic account of creation really gives me reason to pause, reflect. The world, this orbed earth upon which I live, is described as set on some kind of foundation… never to be moved. Chaotic waters blanketed the whole earth. Into that chaos God’s thundering voice tamed those waters.

The waters were ordered by God to recede to their boundaries fixed by him. (Gen 1:6–9). What was left were the beautiful mountains and valleys that we enjoy today – this was day two of creation. Lord, such words, put me in a posture of awe and reverence for you.

Detection of False Prophets

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION:

Remain vigilant towards spiritual truth (1Jn 4:1-3). #FalseTeachers #FalseProphets #SpiritOfAntichrist #DiscerningTruthAndError

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

There are many false prophets in the world. So says the aged apostle, John. These, John says, have the spirit of antichrist and they are already among us. They were around then and they are now. So, John says to test them – is their spirit, their teaching, from God?

Do these teachers/prophets acknowledge that Jesus Christ was God in the form of man? If they do not acknowledge Jesus as the only son of God in the flesh, their teaching is not from God. Jeremiah also addresses detecting false prophets (see Jeremiah 23, this blog). Father, may I remain alert and discerning of spiritual truth and error.

Announcing The Good News

TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BEST NEWS IN ALL OF HISTORY!

“That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep.

Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!

And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭14‬ ‭

Not God’s Children

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION

Know the security of being God‘s child in Christ (1Jn 3:1).

They don’t know God

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

I often hear folks (even certain ministers) say, “We’re all God‘s children.“ Are we? Well, NO, we’re not. We’re certainly all God‘s creation. But the familial relation as “God‘s child” is reserved only for those who believe in Jesus (Jhn 1:11-13).

Here, John teaches that the world does not recognize the Christian’s relationship to God as his children. Why? Because they don’t know God. Paul also makes this clear: they are not children of God, they are “children of the flesh” (Rom 8:5–9; 9:8; see also Gal 3:26; 4:6-7). Lord, I am here affirmed in my relationship to God as his child.

Spirit Life; Courageous Life

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION

Live life according to the truth of God‘s word (1Jn 2:26-28). #HoldFastToTruth #RemainFaithfulToTruth #GospelTruth #SpiritLife

Living Life; Knowing Truth

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

John reminds us that we, as believers, have been given the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. The Spirit guides us in God‘s truth (Jhn 14:16,26; 16:13). Today we also have the inspired word of God. We may test any teaching by God‘s word, whether they be true or not.

Staying true to Christ we must follow God‘s word and his Spirit. The Spirit is Christ within us living out his message. Living by the Spirit, knowing the truth, we may always be courageous and never ashamed. Lord, may I always be discerning of the truth of God.

Are You Awake?

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION

Be alert to the spirit of antichrist (1Jn 2:18-23). #WakeUp #SpiritOfAntichrist #DefendTheTruth

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

We live in the “last days.“ It is evident all around. There is much anti-Christian rhetoric and anti-Christian teaching. This is a spirit of antichrist. It is a sign that we are living in the “last days.” (More on this and false teachers in chapter four)

It is important that the true believer knows the difference between the truth, and the lies of an antichrist teaching. That comes by a genuine conversion to Christ, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who teaches and guides into all truth (Jhn 14:15–17) and a study of God’s word. Lord, may every prayer sentry on the wall remain alert to the presence of the spirit of antichrist in our world.

Bulking Up Faith

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION

Grow in the knowledge of God; grow in every victory over the evil one (1Jn 2:12-14). #FaithIsTheVictory #BulkingUp

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

John stops here to affirm the spiritual equity and proficiency of his readers. “Children“ is not a statement of spiritual sloth, but spiritual position. They are children of God. Young and old in faith, John describes their bulk in equity and proficiency.

Equity: 1) they have had their sins forgiven (v12); 2) they are mature in their knowledge of God the Father (v14).

Proficiency: they are 1) growing in their faith and knowledge of Christ (vv13,14); 2) they are strengthened through every victory over the evil one (vv13,14).

God’s word has been hidden in their hearts (Psm 129:11), they have tasted victory in their lives (v14). Lord, may I count myself among believers who are mature and strong.

Selfless

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION

Show love (selfless concern) for others, even in disagreements (1Jn 2:7-11). #LoveOneAnother #LoveYourEnemy #ShowSelflessConcern

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Not only is our love for God revealed by our obedience to his word, his commands, so also is our love for one another. If we claim to be walking in the light, we will express a selfless sacrificial love for each other (Jhn 13:34,35). We will also express this love towards our enemies as well (Mat 5:43,44).

Selfless love is a hallmark trait of Christian character. At least it should be. You cannot claim to be living in the light and at the same time hate your brother. That is cause for great concern. For such a one still remains in darkness. Lord, may I always show selfless concern for others, even when we disagree.

Prophecy: Then, Yet Far Away

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH & NATION

Eagerly anticipate the second coming of Christ (Jer 50:1–10). #Maranatha #ComeLordJesus

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

This is no hidden prophecy. “Tell the whole world, hold nothing back – Babylon (a symbol of evil through time] will fall.” Seventy years later (539 BC), she was conquered by King Cyrus of the Medo-Persian Empire. It is further announced that God‘s people in captivity (exile) to Babylon would be set free. Having been led astray by their shepherds, they would now find their way home to the sheepfold of God’s making.

While much of this came true after 539 BC, some things are yet to be fulfilled. Babylon as a place and as a symbol of evil, was not totally destroyed by King Cyrus. Also, the total surrender of God’s people to God and return to Jerusalem was only partially fulfilled. So there is a blending of the soon to come then and the yet far away events. God’s calendar is still in play today. *

Lord, may our days today see the total fulfillment of all these events –“Maranatha!”…Oh, Lord, come! (Rev 22:20; Phi 3:20; Tit 2:13; et al.).

TRUST, BUT VERIFY

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

Have a healthy reverence for God; a discerning heart for truth (Jer 28:5–11). #BeDiscerningOfTruth #TrustButVerify #TrustGodsWord

TRUST BUT VERIFY

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

After Hananiah‘s dramatic “prophetic show,“ Jeremiah turned and walked out of the temple. But before he did, he spoke some well, chosen words:

1) He admitted that it would be good if Judah would only be under Babylonian rule for 24 months; 2) he questioned Hananiah’s claim to be a prophet of God – time would tell [TRUST BUT VERIFY].

Jeremiah spoke wisely and correctly. That is when Hananiah broke the yoke on Jeremiah‘s neck. He then doubled down on his fake “word from God.” He showed no fear of God. Lord, may I always have a healthy respect for you and a discerning heart for truth.

God’s Plan For The Nations

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

Acknowledge and surrender to God’s will and plan (Jer 27:1–8). #ISurrenderAll #YesGod

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

God‘s plan for his people was a 70 year exile into Babylon. Babylon was God’s servant in this process. They were conquering all the nations around and including Judah. It is likely that these nations, represented by ambassadors, were in Jerusalem to meet with king Zedekiah (a meeting of the minds) to discuss an overthrow of Babylon.

By God‘s will however, there would be no such plan, enabling his people to escape judgment. God‘s purposes were to lead them into brokenness, repentance and renewed passion to serve him (Jer 29:10-14). Nothing would stand in God‘s way, then or now, of accomplishing those purposes. Lord, I acknowledge your will and surrender my will to you and your plan for me. I acknowledge that you have a plan too, for America. May she listen and surrender.

Say What??

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

Be discerning of those who speak lies and live for their own self interests. (Jer 29:15-23). #BelieveGod #DiscernTruth

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Although God has a “good plan” for his people (vv10–14), to bring them through his discipline, they have a long way to go. But the seers and prophets in their midst were telling them lies and living licentious lives. They sought to silence, Jeremiah (vv26–28). They were giving a false sense of hope.

God will deal harshly with the sin of those who falsely represent God. Part of God‘s “good plan“ includes his discipline. In this case, it will take 70 years to bring his people through that discipline as part of God’s “good plan”. “No one enjoys discipline. But it will produce a good harvest of righteousness in those who are trained by it“ (Heb 12:11).

Lord, may I always speak the truth and live putting others interests ahead of my own (Eph 4:14,15; Phi 2:4).

Doing Life in Trials

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

Stan squarely on the veracity of God‘s word & pray for America (Jer 29:4–10).

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles who were deported following the demise of Judah’a king Jehoiachin and the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon (vv1–4). He told them to prepare for a long stay, 70 years.

Jeremiah also tells them to build houses and plant gardens to sustain themselves. They were to marry, have children, find them spouses and have grandchildren – multiply, not stagnate. They were to work for and pray for the welfare and prosperity of the land in which they were living. They were not to listen to the false prophets telling them any different.

Why listen to Jeremiah? Because all his prophecies came to fruition. So would this one. Lord, may I stand on your word; work for and pray for the welfare of my country.

Standing on Truth

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

Be discerning of those who speak contrary to God’s word (Jer 29:1–3,24-28).

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

There are three letters to those in exile in Babylon in this chapter. The first was from Jeremiah, who spoke the truth of God. The second one was from Shemaiah, a false prophet.

Jeremiah‘s letter was full of hope in the midst of God‘s discipline and troubled times. Shemaiah‘s letter Ignores God‘s purposes. He attacks Jeremiah and presses the priest in exile to put Jeremiah in stocks for telling the people they would be in Babylon for a long time. Shemaiah was saying the opposite of what God had said. (Peter had a similar moment with Jesus – See Mat 16:21-23) *

Lord, may I be discerning of those who speak contrary to your word (friend or foe).

Serious About Sin

[This text requires a slightly longer post]

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

May we live our lives in faithful surrender to God (2Ki 24:13-16). #Surrender #ReturnNowToGod #FaithfulForGod #Repent

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzar, took captive Judah’s king, his family and all of the commanders and officials. He also took 7000 of the best most fit soldiers, 1000 craftsman and many more of the royal’s (including Daniel – Dan 1:1,2).* This was by far the largest siege and deportation of people from Jerusalem to Babylon (the second of three).

In all Nebuchadnezzar removed 10,000 people out of Jerusalem and left only the poorest in the land. Finally, he looted all the treasures from king’s palace. He looted, destroyed and burned the Temple and destroyed the walls around Jerusalem.

All of this was in consequence for unrepentant sin.

Know this, God is serious about sin.

Know also that, in loving kindness, God offers salvation to all who will turn to him in repentance. Lord, it is my desire to live my life in faithful surrender to you.

__________

* Be reminded that all of this was an ongoing fulfillment of several prophecies (Isa 39:1-7; Hab 1:5,6,12). God’s word is true and he keeps his word.

A Sure Word

PRAYING FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS, CHURCH AND NATION:

Humbly bow in obedience and allegiance to God‘s word (Jer 36:27-29,32 ) #God’sWordIsEternal #ObeyGod’sWord #God’sWordIsTruth

MORNING WATCH NOTES:

King Jehoiakim did not like what God had to say in Jeremiah‘s scroll of prophecies. He did not want to hear about sin and repentance, or hear about Babylon’s destruction of Judah and Jerusalem. So he burned the scroll containing God‘s word. But God‘s word will stand (Psm 119:89; Mat 24:35).

Men can burn God‘s word, reject it, ignore it and trash it, but they cannot destroy it. God‘s word is indestructible and eternal in the heavens. God‘s word is truth (Jhn 17:17) and it is living (Heb 4:12). It is a sure and certain word. Lord, I do not stand in judgment of your word, it stands in judgment of me.
